About Us

The Mizzou Birding and Ornithological Society (MBOS) is a sustainability-focused student organization with two primary goals: the first, to promote the safety and wellbeing of campus bird populations, and the second, to provide students with an on-campus birding community. Our organization meets weekly, with meetings alternating between birding trips and project work time. (More information regarding our projects can be found in the "Membership Benefits" section of our Engage profile.) Birders of all levels of experience are welcome!

Members Benefits

Weekly meetings alternate between projects (described below) and birding trips (both on- and off-campus). Projects include: building/maintaining bird houses in safe and adequately landscaped areas, identifying potential hazards around campus, introducing supplementary resources such as native plants, creating/distributing informational material (signs, flyers, etc.) with species-identifying information and conservation tips, advocating for the retrofitting of bird-safe glass over large sections of reflective windows or on behalf of dimming the lights of some buildings at night (during migration season), and fundraising. We will also host fun, relaxed, social events, and attendance at every meeting is NOT required for membership. (In other words, members are allowed to attend bi-weekly trips only, but project participation is always appreciated!) Additionally, members will be encouraged to keep track of birds spotted around campus, both during and outside of meeting times.
