Meaningful recognition is not only a powerful motivator, it creates a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels seen and appreciated. It produces what’s called psychological safety that encourages open sharing of ideas, creative thinking, risk taking and collective growth. It’s about setting a precedent that everyone’s contributions matter, whether it’s in the classroom, on campus, or in life beyond college. David Novak is recognized as a leading authority and advocate for recognition. His message is clear: recognition is not just nice to have; it’s essential in creating healthy, respectful cultures that increase engagement, emotional well-being and productivity. This applies to college environments as well. When you feel recognized and valued, you are more likely to be engaged, healthy and motivated. The workshop will begin with a mini-lecture to introduce the topic followed by a “recognize yourself and others” exercise and participants then joining in group discussion. Lunch will be provided.
Often people think of recognition as the kind of fluffy feel-good stuff that businesses talk about to try to make their employees happy. But if used right, it does a whole lot more than that. Simply put, if you give people genuine appreciation and acknowledge the unique things people have to offer, then you will drive real results. And at the same time, you will lift the spirits of everyone involved. It really does feel good to receive recognition, and it feels every bit as good to give it – often even better.
