As a student organization leader, you hold the responsibility to be informed and educated on how to protect your organization from unnecessary potential and perceived risks.
- Risk is the uncertainty that can be either negative or positive arising out of a given set of circumstances.
- Risk Management is the process of managing the uncertainty of exposures that affect assets and financial statements using five steps: identification, analysis, control, financing and administration.
Types of Risk include:
There are many ways you can protect your organization from liability including the use of waiver forms. Waivers are just one part of a bigger risk management plan, and they don’t do any good unless you educate participants on what they are signing and why they are signing it. A waiver is meant to help others understand the risks associated with an activity, but you have a responsibility to make sure that these risks are communicated clearly and specifically.
In the event that injury occurs during a high risk activity held by an organization, neither the University of Missouri nor the Organization Resource Group (ORG) will be held responsible for said injuries. For these reasons, during events where injury may occur, ORG highly recommends that the host organization require participants to sign a waiver to limit liability to the organization and its constituents.
Waivers may be obtained from ORG Office by emailing studentorgs@missouri.edu.
