Happy November WNR! We're giving thanks this month to all of the lovely members who make this club possible, whether that's by supporting our thrift shop, buying merch which helps to fund our events, or even just showing up to meetings. In addition to highlighting November's events, we also want to call attention to the fact that November is also Native American Heritage month, as well as the handful of environmental dates which take place across the month.
Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month! This is important universally for several reasons, but especially to us, as indigenous voices are crucial in sustainability and environmental justice. Indigenous people have historically been disproportionately impacted by environmental harm and climate change, even within the history of environmentalism, as national parks displaced many tribal groups and disrupted important cultural ways of life. Now, many inspiring advocates such as Xiye Bastida, Tara Houska, and Winona LaDuke have fought back against both climate change and oppressive forms of environmentalism by organizing protests and founding Native-centered climate initiatives. Beyond just the importance of a plurality of voices, indigenous perspectives are particularly valuable to the environmentalist movement because their historical stewardship of the land is extremely illuminating to sustainability and biodiversity protection.
Events
With the help of many devoted and hard-working volunteers, last month saw WNR proudly continue its biannual Thrift Shop tradition. This event has become one of the cornerstone fundraisers of each semester, helping WNR to raise money for future projects while also tackling the issue of fast fashion. To everyone who donated, volunteered, or shopped, your efforts made the event a tremendous success! Additionally, that month, WNR had the exciting opportunity to take a camping trip filled with fun and even a trip to a cave.
This month, WNR also hosted a cozy bonfire night complete with hot dogs, burgers, and a whole lot of card games. Looking forward, be sure to mark your calendars for November 17th, when we team up for an exciting collaboration with Raptor Rehab. We can’t wait to see you there!
Environmental Dates
Equal parts quaint and educational, November is packed with national observances that call attention to matters ranging from the importance of veganism to the protection of bison, responsible recycling practices, and the sustainability of our fisheries.
